Apartment Cleaning Checklist 

Floors 

  • Sweep all high-traffic hard floor areas. Entryways and kitchens should be accumulating dirt, dust, and crumbs. This should be done for all hard surfaces, but the focus should be on high-traffic areas. 

  • Vacuum rugs/carpets. Entryway mats/rugs should be vacuumed, and high-traffic carpet/rugs in the living rooms should be vacuumed as well to keep them presentable. It's a good idea to do this in other areas as well, such as bedrooms and other lesser-traffic areas.
     
  • Mop hard flooring. High traffic areas will need a light mop (kitchen, bathroom) with a proper solution specific to the type of tile (ceramic, vinyl, laminate, etc.) for proper maintenance. 


Dusting 


  • Dust ceiling fans, bookshelves, knick-knacks, basic dusting up high and down low (baseboards). 

  • Dust electronics (TVs, stands), desks, and nightstands. 

  • Dust windowsills, doorjambs, and vents.

Kitchen 

  • Wipe all cabinets. No dirt on the inside or outside. This helps protect your belongings and the cabinet itself. 

  • Clean appliances. Stoves (top, front, sides), microwaves (inside, outside), and refrigerators (front and sides) help keep a kitchen clean and sanitary. 

  • Sanitize counter tops and backsplashes. 
  • Clear out the refrigerator. The inside is just as important as the outside. Weekly, old food should be discarded that is no good. Monthly, everything should be removed and the inside cleaned. This cleaning should involve checking condiments to ensure they're still good. 



Bathroom 

  • Scrub showers/tubs. 

  • Scrub sinks. 

  • Sanitize toilets (inside, out, and on top of the seat). 

  • Shower curtain liner or removable if usable. Make sure a usable mat/cloth liner is removed. Bathmats need addressing, as well as the floor underneath any toilet or other mats. 

 


Living/Bedroom Areas 

  • Change any linens, pillowcases. 
  • Dust across bookshelves, drawers, and closets, making sure everything is in order. 
  • Sanitize doorknobs, light switches, and remotes.

Windows 

Clean inside windows with proper window cleaner. 


 

How to Clean Blinds 

Blinds aren't something people often think of in an unclean apartment. Therefore, learn how to clean blinds according to what kind they are, so you're not wasting time sidetracked. 


How to Clean Wood Blinds 

If you have wood blinds: 
  • Dust them with a microfiber cloth or duster. 
  • If deeper cleaning is necessary, use a damp cloth with an appropriate cleaner for the wood. 
  • Do not soak the wooden slats as water will warp them. 

 


How to Clean Cellular Blinds/Honeycomb Blinds 

Cellular/honeycomb blinds are fabric pockets more for looks than actual function, as they rarely open/close. 

  • Vacuum low with brush attachment. 
  • Spot clean with mild soap/warm water. 
  • Spray canned air through all the holes if you want to clean from within the cells, too. 


 


How to Clean Fabric Blinds 

You clean fabric blinds similar to upholstery: 

  • Vacuum regularly for dust. 
  • Spot treat stains as needed with fabric-safe cleaners. 
  • Depending on the fabric blinds purchased, some will need professional cleaning instead. 



How to Clean Venetian Blinds 


If you're wondering how to clean Venetian blinds: 

  • Close them and wipe horizontally with a microfiber cloth. 
  • Turn them over and do the same. 

If they're metal, warm water and mild dish soap work well. 

Make sure they dry completely before putting back up— nobody wants drips.

  • Get one of those microfiber tools that close around the blinds so you can swipe at a bunch at once. 
  • Vacuums with soft brush attachments work great. 
  • Pre-moisten wipes across them.
