1. Abilene Zoo 


Featuring flora and fauna from habitats ranging from the frozen tundra of the Arctic to the scorched Australian Outback, Abilene Zoological Park is home to more than 250 species and over 1,000 animals. Stretching over 16 acres within east Abilene’s Grover Nelson Park, with a 24-acre expansion in the works, the Zoo also includes an aquarium, picnic grove, children’s adventure center, gift shop, and concessions.    


When you’re ready for a break from pounding the pavement, the Safari Express Train ferries patrons across the property, take a ride on the Wildlife Carousel, or pan for gold, gems, and fossils at the Kilimanjaro Mining Sluice. 2. The Grace Museum

With over 10,000 pieces in their permanent collection, The Grace Museum spans more than 55,000 square feet over four stories in the former site of the historic red-brick Grace Hotel. Following an impeccable restoration in the early 1990’s, the site was included in the National Register of Historic Places. In addition to the Museum, The Grace features a gorgeous rooftop terrace and magnificent formal ballroom for hosting events.

The Museum’s collections and exhibits cover fine art, history, photography, and a children’s gallery. In the art galleries, peruse more than 5,000 works from a variety of mediums and periods. 3. Abilene Christian University Athletics 


On fall Saturdays in Abilene, Abilene Christian University Wildcats football games are the hottest ticket in town! With home games at 12,000-seat Anthony Field, the Wildcats take the gridiron in front of an enthusiastic throng of purple and white-clad fans. 5. Abilene State Park 


Just south of Abilene near Buffalo Gap, 530-acre Abilene State Park offers a quick escape from life in the city. The Park includes a vast network of hiking trails, picnic shelters, rentable campgrounds, yurts & RV hookups, basketball & sand volleyball courts, and a swimming pool built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s. Striking red sandstone buildings built by the Corps during the Great Depression are scattered throughout the Park.
